Teaching of music and theatre

The Danish Music and Theatre folk high school with special emphasis on the teaching of music, singing, sound technic, dance and theatre. Classes in these subjects are designed for both the student at beginner level as well as the more experienced student.

The professional quality of the teaching is of such a high standard that many of our students continue their studies in music and theatre at institutions of further and higher education.

The length of the school semester varies between 12 and 23 weeks depending on whether you choose the autumn or the spring term.

Apart from tuition in the schools two main subjects each student has the opportunity to choose between a number of optional subjects such as art, puppet theatre, film, literature, sport, choir, sound-technique, dance, music for theatre students, and theatre for music students.

The school term also includes a large number of lectures on various topics, concerts, theatre performances, song evenings and excursions.

As well as special joint projects where students from each of the two main subjects can work together a study trip will also be arranged.

Over the last few years the school has visited London and Berlin. Toward the end of each term the whole school goes on tour giving concerts and performances in various towns and cities in Denmark. The purpose of the tour is to enable the students to show the results of their terms work to a wider audience.

Founded in 1984 the Sønderjyske Højskole lies in the middle of the southern Jutland town of Toftlund in a building which was once the town's diary.

The main part of the old building is now the heart of the school with a kitchen, dinning room, student accommodation, common room, etc. As well as 4 well equiped music rooms plus a sound studio in their own self contained building the school has its very own Arts Centre (Kulturhus). Built in 1990 the Centre has a 500 square metre auditorium, a costume room, dressing rooms plus a large collection of theatrical wigs.

The school can accommodate up to 56 students in double rooms. The average age is 20 but you must be at least 17½ at the beginning at the term.

The cost for tuition, board and lodging is 1175 Danish kroner per week.
